About InspiroMEDIA®

InspiroMEDIA Corporation was founded by Tom Dean. Mr. Dean was first introduced to patents and trademarks in 1986-87 while attending Southern Polytechnic State University in Marietta Georgia; formally Southern Technical Institute.

During this time, I trained as a patent illustrator for Sampson and Associates, an established drafting firm in Atlanta at the time.

In 1988, I setup a new drafting firm with local Atlanta IP firms. Up until around 1989, all patent drawings were created as physical line drawings prepared on bristol board using technical drawing pens. Changes to pen and ink drawings prepared by hand were a challenge and time consuming. One of the very first illustration software applications for the Windows operating system was called Micrografx Designer. Using a scanner, with Micrografx Designer, we became one of the first patent drafting firms to successfully incorporate computer assisted editing into the patent drawing process.

Early on in the adoption of computer based illustration for patent drawings, the US PTO was restrictive in allowing the submission of computer drawings because the output quality of CAD software at the time was not up to industry accepted standards for professional technical illustration.

CAD software at the time was primarily used to aid in the creation of blueprints which is sufficient for engineering purposes but technical illustration for patents is a combination of art and engineering.

We were able to expand from simply editing scanned “hand drawn” illustrations to preparing complete sets of utility as well as design patent drawings. We were able to submit allowable formal patent drawings during a time when the CFR did not accept computer generated drawings.

Today, most illustration firms utilize illustration and CAD software in the rendering of services and possibly were in the process of adopting these practices in the early 90’s as well, but InspiroMEDIA was one of the first. Before the Internet became commonplace, InspiroMEDIA began electronic delivery of drawings via an in house BBS system. Soon after, InspiroMEDIA.com was created.

In 2000, InspiroMEDIA was incorporated and now serves the illustration needs of innovative companies, patent attorneys at IP law firms throughout the Southeast, West Coast as well as individual inventors and entrepreneurs.

Today, InspiroMEDIA continues to render patent illustration services to firms and companies throughout the U.S. I serve as the lead contact person and am responsible for much of the illustration and product concept design services while engineering and other manufacturing related services may be fulfilled through outside engineering firms, tooling and contract manufacturers.
